Turf Observation and Monitoring Instrument

TOMi™ — the next evolution in turf measurement

The industry’s only monitoring instrument designed specifically for turfgrass. Built for turf. Built on science. Built for better decisions.

Not another soil sensor

Engineered around the turfgrass system itself.

TOMi isn’t another soil sensor adapted for turf. Built on more than 30 years of turfgrass science, it measures what matters, where it matters — taking bulk measurements through the critical upper 6 cm of the rootzone for moisture, EC and salinity stress, while measuring temperature at the canopy/soil interface.

Conventional sensors were developed for other applications and adapted afterwards. TOMi was engineered around the question that actually matters: what should be measured, where it should be measured, and how those measurements can be made consistently and reliably over time.

Turn it on and measure. Readings land on the integrated colour touchscreen in fractions of a second — no phone, no tablet, nothing else to carry. And because TOMi is built around the PURE Insight™ platform, an active plan positions, maps and keeps every reading as you take it — analytics, spatial assessments and trends are what the instrument is for, not a module bolted on afterwards. Without a plan it still logs, so you are never locked out of your own numbers.

Why TOMi

Seven reasons it reads differently.

Purpose-built for turf

The industry’s only monitoring instrument designed specifically for turfgrass — not adapted from agriculture, construction or horticulture.

Science-driven measurement

Measures the critical upper 6 cm of the rootzone for moisture, EC and salinity stress, plus temperature at the canopy/soil interface.

Precision that endures

Ceres™ is engineered for accuracy, consistency and durability through changing turfgrass conditions and repeated field use.

No calibration. Ever.

No routine calibration procedures, no adjustments, no drift management. TOMi is designed to hold its measurement integrity over time.

Ready the moment it arrives

Power on and measure. No phone, no tablet, no external display, and no setup to work through — TOMi ships configured, so your first action is a reading rather than an installation.

Large colour touchscreen

Measurement data and instrument controls are immediately available on TOMi’s integrated 6.7″ display, in fractions of a second.

Built on PURE Insight™

One instrument, one platform, one system.

TOMi is a connected instrument. GPS and cellular are on board as standard, and an active PURE Insight™ plan puts them to work: every sample positioned, uploaded and turned into spatial assessments, trends and actionable intelligence as you take it. The platform isn’t an upgrade path bolted onto a probe — it is half of what you are buying.

Without an active plan TOMi still logs. Power it on, sample, and the numbers are on screen — moisture, EC, salinity stress and canopy temperature, just as the original TOMi app gave them. No GPS, no mapping, no analytics, but never a dead instrument.

See what the platform adds

The Ceres™ sensor reads the 0–6 cm band that governs what happens at the surface.

The Ceres™ sensor

The part that makes the difference.

Angular sensing elements precision-engineered from premium marine-grade stainless steel — hard enough to survive repeated insertion into sand-based rootzones while holding the geometry that keeps measurements comparable, season after season.

Highest sample volume in turf

A larger bulk measurement means a reading that represents the surface, not a single lucky pore. That is what raises sampling fitness.

Four measurements, each on its own terms

Moisture, electrical conductivity, salinity stress and in-canopy temperature — each measured on its own terms, not inferred from one another.

Tuned to eliminate rootzone noise

The algorithm is tuned to the turfgrass rootzone, so what reaches the screen is signal you can act on.

Why the upper 6 cm matters

On the screen

Insight the moment the tines come out.

Every sample returns a multi-variable reading with threshold indicators the instant the tines come out. On an active PURE Insight™ plan it reaches the platform at the same moment, where on-board GPS turns a handful of readings into a map, and a season of them into a trend.

GPS positioning, mapping and analytics run on an active PURE Insight™ plan. Without one, TOMi logs in standalone mode: the readings on screen, and nothing between you and them.

Technical specifications

What’s inside.

Ceres™ sensor
Multi-parameter measurement of moisture (VWC + WFV algorithms), EC (dS/m), salinity stress (relative scale) and canopy temperature (in-canopy, °C or °F). Marine-grade stainless steel tines.
Measurement depth
Fixed at 6.0 cm — scientifically established as the most influential region of the turf system for surface conditions, and the most informative about trends deeper in the rootzone.
Precision
Under 1% tool-to-tool variation; moisture to under 0.5% variance; EC within 0.03 dS/m. No calibration required, ever.
Display
On-board 6.7″ colour touchscreen. Every sample returns a multi-variable report on screen in fractions of a second.
Power
5000 mAh on-board rechargeable cell with rapid USB-C IP67 external charge connector. Typically several days of heavy use per charge.
Data
On-board logic and display give an immediate multi-variable report with no additional hardware. On-board GPS positioning and cellular communication keep every sample synchronised with the PURE Insight™ platform on an active plan.
Modes
With an active PURE Insight™ plan: GPS positioning, mapping, analytics, trending and defensible documentation. Standalone logging: available at any time without a plan — power on and sample, with moisture, EC, salinity stress and canopy temperature read straight from the screen. No GPS, no mapping, no analytics. See the plan levels
Build
Reinforced aluminium construction with extruded plastic exterior, weather-tight internal and external connectors, condensation protection. 107 cm (42″) overall length with two-hand stable grips.
Options
Firmness measurement available as an option.
Warranty
1-year professional warranty on the instrument, 30-day confidence protection, guaranteed 4-day repair turnaround and lifetime repair support. Ceres™ sensor performance is covered by a lifetime performance warranty on the active PURE Insight™ platform. Read the full warranty

Own your data. With PURE Insight™, you always own your data — export it, keep it, take it with you. Connected does not mean captive: the platform holds your measurements to serve you, and they remain yours.

Value delivered

What it changes on Monday morning.

Stress management

Managing stress is what separates good turf from exceptional turf. Walking that line takes uncompromised insight — not a guess dressed up as a number.

Input optimisation

Take the guesswork out of irrigation events, cultural practices and IPM conditioning. TOMi shows where attention is needed and gives you confidence to act.

Performance trending

With PURE Insight™ analytics engaged, track conditions over any period and run predictive models suited to your site and your season.

Defensible documentation

Transparent, time-stamped records of environmental conditions and management responses — for ownership, boards and regulators.

The name

A name rooted in legacy. A tool built for what’s next.

TOMi™ stands for Turf Observation and Monitoring Instrument — but the name carries a deeper meaning. It is our homage to Old Tom Morris, golf’s first Keeper of the Green, who began his tenure in 1851 and went on to define the role at St Andrews from 1864 to 1903.

Morris was renowned not just for his stewardship but for his willingness to adopt advanced practices and unconventional tools long before they were widely accepted. He didn’t wait for the industry to catch up; he led it.

That same spirit drives TOMi™. Old Tom read his turf by instinct and experience. TOMi gives today’s Keepers of the Green the data to do the same.
